What’s the Difference Between Oracle and Tarot Cards?

Tarot v’s Oracle cards

If you’ve ever walked into a metaphysical shop or scrolled through Instagram’s spiritual side, you’ve probably seen a rainbow of card decks labeled tarot or oracle. But what’s the difference between them—and which one should you choose?

Both tarot and oracle cards are tools for spiritual insight, reflection, and personal growth. However, they differ significantly in structure, symbolism, and how they’re used. Let’s break it down!

Tarot Cards: A Structured System

Tarot cards follow a traditional format of 78 cards, which are split into two main categories:

  • Major Arcana (22 cards): These represent life’s big themes and spiritual lessons (like The Fool, The Lovers, or Death).
  • Minor Arcana (56 cards): Divided into four suits—Cups, Wands, Pentacles, and Swords—these cards deal with day-to-day situations and emotions.

Each card in a tarot deck has established meanings, numerology, and symbolic imagery that align across most decks (especially those based on the Rider-Waite-Smith system). Learning tarot is like learning a new language—it has grammar, rules, and structure. Once you know the system, you can read almost any tarot deck.

Great for you if:
You love structure, symbolism, and want to learn a system with depth and consistency over time.

Oracle Cards: Freedom & Flexibility

Oracle cards, on the other hand, are more fluid. There’s no standard number of cards or set system—every deck is created uniquely by its author or artist. Some decks have 44 cards, others might have 30 or 60. Each card usually carries a clear message or affirmation, like “Let Go” or “Divine Timing”.

Oracle decks are often themed—angel cards, animal spirit cards, moon phase cards, self-love decks, and more. They’re intuitive, emotional, and designed to spark insight without needing prior study.

Great for you if:
You prefer intuitive guidance, are new to cards, or want a quick message without memorising meanings.

So, Which One Should You Use?

Honestly? You don’t have to choose just one!

  • Use tarot when you want a detailed spread or to dive deep into a situation.
  • Use oracle when you want a gentle nudge, affirmation, or soulful check-in.
  • Use both together for layered, powerful readings.

My Final Thoughts

Both tarot and oracle cards are tools to connect with your intuition and higher self. One isn’t better than the other—it just depends on your personal style, preferences, and how you like to receive guidance.

If you’re a beginner, start with the deck that visually speaks to you. Your intuition already knows what you need.
